A firm that describes itself as covering the whole of Sweden and a search report that says Skåne in April and Norrbotten in October are describing the same business on the same week. Reading Search Console and rank tracking well means turning the gap between those two sentences into a decision about which pages exist.
Take a company with a workshop outside Jönköping, a depot in Malmö, a depot in Sundsvall and a sales office nobody visits. Its website says it serves customers nationwide. That is true in the sense that an order from Umeå will be accepted and eventually fulfilled, and untrue in the sense that fulfilling it next Tuesday needs a van, a driver and a promise the operations manager will not make.
Everything difficult about the search data sits in that gap. The reporting is national because the company is national on paper; the demand is regional because customers are where they are, and it does not arrive evenly.
The panel discussed here brings Search Console, live rank tracking and generative market research into one account, and this article works through the reporting side of the Semalt workspace from the point of view of a business whose national figure is an accident of addition.
Three depots, one telephone number, one line on the chart
The chart shows impressions rising by nine per cent over ninety days. Nothing in that sentence tells you whether the rise came from a county where you can deliver on Thursday or from one where the honest answer is a fortnight and a surcharge. Both raise the line by the same amount.
The trouble is not that averages lie. It is that a company organised around depots is reading a figure organised around a domain. Depots have catchments, opening hours and a lorry that leaves at six; a domain has none of those, so the reporting quietly assumes the business has none either.
The correction is unglamorous. Before interpreting any national number, decide which regional groupings you would act on differently, and carry them through every view you open afterwards. Site tags behave as a global filter across the panel, so the grouping is defined once.
- Delivery, not distance. Group by where you can actually serve on a normal week, not by kilometres from the workshop. Two counties an equal distance away may sit in different groups.
- Depot, not county. If Malmö serves four counties, that catchment is one unit in your reporting even though the map shows four shapes.
- Capacity, not ambition. A region you would like to grow into and a region you already cover belong in separate groups, because the same rising line means opposite things in each.
The English visitor wants the opposite page from the Swedish one
The English layer is not the Swedish site in another vocabulary. It attracts a reader the Swedish pages rarely see: a company establishing itself here. A German manufacturer signing a lease on a plant, a Dutch logistics operator setting up a hub, a British firm hiring its first employee in the country and needing an accountant, a fitter and a broadband contractor within the month.
That reader cannot evaluate the regional geography. Told a supplier is strong in Västra Götaland, they have no way to judge whether that helps, since the plant site is not settled and the county names mean nothing yet. What reassures them is coverage: a national page reads as a company you can rely on anywhere.
The domestic reader has precisely the reverse instinct. A national page reads to them as a company with no particular presence, an operation run from somewhere else that will quote a callout charge. A regional page reads as somebody who is already here.
Reader who already knows the map
Wants to know whether you are near enough to turn up, and treats a national claim as evasion.
- Queries name a town or county
- Judges you on response time
Reader establishing operations here
Wants to know whether you are a real company with capacity, and treats a regional claim as a limitation.
- Queries name the country and the service
- Judges you on scale and English
Small volumes, high intent
Forty impressions in a county town can convert better than four thousand across the country.
- Read enquiries, not impressions
- Ninety-day window, not twenty-eight
Long decision, few searchers
An establishment decision runs for months and produces a handful of searches from a handful of people.
- Watch position, not click volume
- Expect a flat curve with real value behind it
Splitting the national figure into things that move separately
The countries view is the first cut, and more interesting here than it sounds. A supplier with an English section finds enquiry-shaped traffic arriving from Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark and the United Kingdom: the establishment audience, reaching you before it has a Swedish address. Inside the national total it is invisible; separated, it is a small coherent stream with its own pages.
The second cut is regional, which Search Console does not hand you directly for a single country. What it does hand you is queries, and Swedish queries carry their geography in the words: a town name, a county name, a district. Grouping query rows by the place words they contain reconstructs most of the regional picture from data you already have.
The third cut is device. Someone standing in a yard hunting for a replacement part behaves nothing like someone comparing suppliers from a desk, and the two rarely appear in the same session.
| Cut | Question it answers | Where it comes from | What changes because of it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Country | Domestic demand or inbound establishment? | Countries view | Which language layer gets the next page |
| Place words in queries | Which counties are actually asking? | Keywords view, grouped by hand | Whether a regional page is justified |
| Depot catchment | Can we serve this demand next week? | Site tags, defined by you | Whether to answer the demand at all |
| Device | On site or at a desk? | Devices view | Page length and where the number sits |
| Season | Is this a cycle or a change? | 90-day range plus year-earlier comparison | Whether anything needs doing this month |
Five cuts sound like administration until you notice they replace the recurring meeting where somebody asks why traffic is down and four people offer theories. A cut figure settles it in a minute: the fall shows in one group and is absent from the others.
Eight Search Console views, and the question behind each
The Search Console section of the panel runs across eight views, and the fastest way to make them useful is to attach one question to each rather than browsing them in order. The dashboard spans every verified site with clicks, impressions, click-through rate, trend and health flags; site overview, keywords, pages, devices, countries and traffic narrow the field from there.
| View | The question | How often to open it |
|---|---|---|
| Dashboard across sites | Has anything moved that I did not expect? | Weekly |
| Site overview | Is this property behaving like last quarter? | Weekly |
| Keywords | Which place words are people attaching to our service? | Weekly |
| Pages | Is the national page absorbing regional demand? | Fortnightly |
| Devices | Are we being read in a yard or at a desk? | Quarterly |
| Countries | Is the establishment audience growing? | Monthly |
| Traffic | Does the shape match the sales calendar? | Monthly |
| Keyword dynamics | What entered and what fell out? | Weekly |
Entries and exits at the top three, top ten and top thirty
Most analytics views hand you a number and leave the judgement to you. Keyword dynamics is different: it tracks which keywords enter or leave the top three, top ten and top thirty, and a crossing is an event whether or not anyone was watching. That makes it the one place where a threshold can be written down in advance and enforced without argument.
Where coverage is uneven, the same crossing means different things by group. A place word entering the top ten in a county the Malmö depot serves is a commercial event. The same crossing in a county reachable only at a fortnight's notice is a warning that enquiries you cannot fulfil comfortably are on their way.
- Entry into the top ten, served region. Check the page ranking for it and make sure the depot and its hours are on it. This is the cheapest conversion work available.
- Entry into the top ten, unserved region. Decide, in writing, whether to take the demand or dampen it. Both are legitimate; drifting is not.
- Exit from the top thirty, English query. Establishment queries are low-volume, so an exit will not show in the click total. It shows here first or nowhere.
- Repeated crossing of the same boundary. A keyword oscillating around the tenth position for six weeks is a page that is nearly good enough, which is the easiest kind to fix.
Six rank-tracking views, and why the competitor list looks wrong at first
The live rank-tracking module runs across six views: a ranking score spanning sites, average position, keyword counts, top keywords by search volume and current position, the pages performing best, and a competitor view listing the domains sharing your keyword space with their domain authority and the keywords you have in common. A global ranking across the whole portfolio with a twenty-eight-day trend curve sits above them.
The competitor view is where a nationally-framed company usually gets its first genuine surprise. The domains sharing your keyword space are frequently not the other national suppliers you benchmark against in board meetings. They are single-county operators with a thin site, twenty pages and an unarguable claim to being in the county. They outrank you on the queries that convert, and they are invisible in any conversation about the market conducted at national level.
The mirror image appears on English queries, where the competitor set contracts sharply. Few Swedish suppliers maintain a serious English section, so positions unreachable in Swedish are ordinary in English.
Crowded by people with one county
Thin sites with an unarguable local claim take the converting queries and never appear in a national benchmark.
- Check rivals per region group
- Compare on shared keywords, not size
Nearly empty, and slow to fill
Establishment queries are contested by a handful of domains, several of them foreign advisers rather than suppliers.
- Track position, not volume
- Re-check the field twice a year
The generative research section reads differently again: a competitiveness score with a market circle separating top-tier, mid-tier and niche rivals, a model-written market context, query research with intent classification, and pages flagged as candidates for expansion or internal linking. It is opinion rather than measurement, which suits the establishment audience, where measured volumes are too small to argue with.
The regional page question, settled by the delivery calendar
Sooner or later the data produces the same question in a dozen forms: one national page, or a page per region? The data cannot answer it, and the honest test has nothing to do with search. It is whether you could serve a customer from that region next week without anybody wincing.
If yes, a regional page describes something real and reads that way. If no, it is a claim, and it reads as one: the failures are nearly always a national text with a county name dropped into eleven slots and nothing else changed.
| Situation | Recommended shape | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Depot in the region, normal delivery | Full regional page | There is genuinely different content: address, hours, staff, cases |
| No depot, served by partner | Section on the national page | The distinction is real but too thin to fill a page |
| Served on request, at a surcharge | Nothing regional | A page would generate enquiries you would rather refuse |
| English, establishment audience | National page only | Regional framing reduces perceived capacity for this reader |
| Seasonal presence only | National page, seasonal section | An always-on page for a four-month presence dates badly |
AutoSEO — the campaign runs itself
For a company that wants the measurement discipline described above without adding a role to the payroll.
- Keywords found and ranked automatically. The pool draws on Search Console, live results and your own seed terms, and every candidate is approved, rejected or deferred one at a time.
- Link building without a manual queue. Placements run through a partner network of more than 230,000 websites.
- Full analytics included. Both the Search Console and rank-tracking sections, plus on-site suggestions and a live assistant.
FullSEO — decisions reviewed by people
For the company where a regional claim has to be checked against the delivery calendar before it is published.
- Keywords chosen by hand. Manual selection with automatic fallback, which matters when half your keyword list names places you cannot serve.
- Placements with a target quality. Manual link placement against a stated domain-rating target.
- Changes held for review. A human review mode for on-site edits, alongside a team of specialists, developers and writers.
The reporting side is the same at either level: exports to CSV or JSON up to 10,000 rows, PDF up to 250 rows rendered on the server, and a report builder that takes your logo and colours. Stream, the project assistant, keeps answers, automatic reports, newly placed links with donor metrics, to-dos and campaign news in one chronological feed, and its router loads between zero and three blocks of real project data per question. More on how the campaign side reads these signals sits in the overview of the automation tiers; the technical groundwork for regional pages is covered under our services.
Questions this raises in practice
Our national figure looks healthy. Is there any reason to cut it up?
A healthy national figure hides as much detail as an unhealthy one. The usual discovery is that two thirds of the growth sits in a region you serve badly, while the region you have just invested in is flat. Better known while the investment is young than at the annual review.
How do we separate domestic and inbound traffic when both land on English pages?
The countries view does most of the work, imperfectly: a Dutch project manager already living here shows as domestic. Then read query shape. Establishment queries name the country and the service and almost never a town, because the writer does not yet know which town they will end up in.
A county town produces forty impressions a month. Is that worth a page?
Not on the impressions. It may well be worth it on the enquiries, and forty impressions with a depot twenty minutes away can convert at a rate no national keyword approaches. Judge small-volume rows on what they turn into, over ninety days rather than twenty-eight, and never against a national row on the same axis.
How long before a change in this reporting shows up as a change in results?
First measurable movement typically appears after four to eight weeks. Regional pages sit at the slower end: they compete with operators who have been in the county a decade and whose links show it.
Should the English pages mirror the Swedish ones one for one?
Only where the same reader exists in both. Service and capability pages, yes. The regional pages, generally not: the reader who needs them reads Swedish, and the reader who reads English wants the national view instead. A translated county page usually earns nothing and costs a maintenance obligation.
The figure is only useful once it has an owner and a boundary
Nothing in the panel decides anything by itself. What it does is make it impossible to keep discussing a national average as though the company behind it were a single undivided thing. Once the regional groups exist and the crossings at the top three, ten and thirty carry a name each, the weekly conversation stops being about the direction of a line and becomes a question of which region asked for something you can supply.
For a business that is national on paper and regional in practice, that is the whole shift, and it costs one working session to set up. The Swedish layer answers the reader who wants to know whether you are nearby; the English layer answers the reader who wants to know whether you are substantial; neither has to pretend to be the other. Earlier pieces on measurement and structure sit in the English blog, and the practical next step is to connect a property so the first ninety days arrive already cut: open the panel and add your first site.
